Revisiting the Practical Implementation of Information Technology in the Archives of Kazakhstan

Abstract: In the context of the digital transformation of almost all spheres of society, the aspects of the introduction and use of information technologies in the activities of archival institutions become especially relevant. The main directions of informatization of the archival industry in Kazakhstan are analyzed, and first of all – the organization of archival storage of electronic records created in the Unified Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) and other state information systems. The project “Unified Electronic Records Archives” (ERA) and problems of normative regulation of long-term storage of electronic records are highlighted. The automation of the state archives activities through All-Russian Scientific and Research Institute for Records and Archives Management (VNIIDAD) high mediation, which was started in the mid-90s, represented as a separate direction. The experience of the Archive of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan in digitizing archival records, creating electronic reference and information resources and databases is cited as an example. The practice of organizing virtual exhibitions posted on the official sites of archives is described as one of the most popular forms. In conclusion, the significant adjustments to the organization and content of the work of state archives made by rapidly accelerating rates of technological progress in a relatively short period of time are observed.
